Moving to Waco Checklist: Licenses, Utilities, and Schools

Move Here

Moving to Waco from out of state? Texas has a few deadlines new residents need to know. Use this checklist and confirm the details with each official office.

1. Get a Texas driver license

New residents with a valid out-of-state license must get a Texas driver license within 90 days of moving. Book an appointment with the Texas Department of Public Safety early — slots fill up.

2. Inspect and register your vehicle

Texas asks new residents to register their vehicles within 30 days. Get a Texas vehicle inspection first, then register and title through the McLennan County Tax Assessor-Collector.

3. Set up utilities

The City of Waco provides water, sewer, and trash service inside city limits. Electricity is a deregulated market in much of the area, so you may choose your own retail provider. Suburbs like Woodway and Hewitt run their own city services.

4. Register to vote

Register with the McLennan County Elections Office after you move. Texas requires registration at least 30 days before an election.

5. Enroll in school

Your address decides your public school district. Greater Waco includes Waco ISD, Midway ISD, China Spring ISD, Lorena ISD, Robinson ISD, and others. See our schools guide and check ratings with the Texas Education Agency.
