Housing in McGregor is among the more affordable in the Greater Waco area, with a mix of older homes near downtown, mid-century builds, and newer construction. The city is served by McGregor ISD, covering elementary through high school. McGregor's historic downtown has local businesses, restaurants, and the McGregor Chamber of Commerce, while larger retail needs are met in Waco, about 20 minutes east.

The SpaceX facility, which expanded significantly in the 2010s and 2020s, has brought engineering and technical jobs to the area and contributed to housing demand. The city also has a municipal airport and is near the Bluebonnet Airpark.

For newcomers, McGregor offers affordable housing, a short commute to Waco, and employment opportunities at one of the region's most significant employers. The trade-off is fewer retail and dining options locally, with most amenities a drive into Waco.
